You’ve Been Diagnosed with an Autoimmune Disease, Now What?
- Melissa Wolney
Hearing the words “you have an autoimmune disease” can feel like a wave crashing over you. You may feel relief, fear, validation, confusion, all at the same time. After months or years of unexplained symptoms, you finally have an answer, but now you have even more questions.
First thing to do is take a breathe. Actually, take a few deep breaths. You do not need to solve everything this week.
Healing your autoimmune disease isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing things differently. It begins with small, consistent choices that help you learn all about this new path.
I do not recommend immediately googling ways to “cure” your autoimmune disease. You are going to quickly become overwhelmed. The internet is filled with so-called “quick fixes,” fancy supplements, restrictive diets, and conflicting advice from different types of providers.
When you’re newly diagnosed, it can be tempting to try everything at once. But trying to change too many things too quickly can leave you feeling confused, exhausted, and unsure about what is actually helping.
Instead, start by slowing down and focusing on the basics. The goal during this first stage is not to fix everything overnight, but to understand your diagnosis and begin building a foundation.
Below is the first simple step to help you feel less overwhelmed and create momentum in your first month, beginning with this week.
Step 1: Gather the Basics (Your Essentials)
Before drowning in research, make a list of what you already know. This simple step provides clarity and prepares you for future appointments.
You don’t need to understand everything yet, just begin organizing the information you already have.
• Write the exact name of your diagnosis and the provider who confirmed it.
• List your current medications and supplements (with doses).
• Create one folder (paper or digital) for labs, visit summaries, and notes.
• Schedule or confirm your next appointment (primary care + one relevant specialist).
• Start a simple symptom log so you can track how you’re feeling from week to week.

This tiny bit of organization prevents chaos and makes upcoming visits much smoother.
